Ville du Northumberland située à l’embouchure de la Tweed. Berwick on Tweed ne prend de l’importance qu’à la fin du XIe siècle, quand la frontière entre l’Écosse et l’Angleterre se fixe sur la Tweed. Convoitée par chacun des deux pays, elle change treize fois de mains avant 1482, date de son acquisition définitive par l’Angleterre. Souvent dévastée, Berwick connut cependant une activité importante; port exportateur de laine, elle est, au XIIIe siècle, une des quatre villes privilégiées d’Écosse, membre du Court of the Four Burghs. Sa situation lui vaut de nombreux privilèges. Fortifiée par les Anglais au début du XIVe siècle, elle l’est à nouveau sous Élisabeth Ire. Plusieurs traités y sont signés entre l’Angleterre et l’Écosse. L’importance de Berwick décroît considérablement après l’union des couronnes (1603).
